Fallingwater: Coming Soon To Norwich VT

My parents pulled me out of school--for the first and only time--for a trip to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, just outside of Pittsburgh in Mill Run PA. One fact stood out for me. When Wright built this vacation home for the Kaufman family, owners of one of Pittsburgh's three major department stores, everyone assumed that he would design the building so that the occupants could take in the view of the site's spectacular waterfall.

Not so. Wright built the house over it. The famous architect (who was at the time in somewhat of a professional slump) decided that the falls should not be viewed through a window. He did, however, create a home in which the sound of the water can be heard in every room. He thought the sound would entice those inside to leave the home's confines to experience the waterfall as it should be--outside, in nature.

You can take a trip to Fallingwater without leaving the Upper Valley. On Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m., the former executive director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, H. Nicholas Muller, will speak about the renowned architect and his awe-inspiring creation. This event at the Norwich Congregational Church, 15 Church Street, Norwich VT is brought to you by the Vermont Humanities Council and the Norwich Public Library. Here's a snippet about a place that is so beloved that Brad Pitt chose a visit there as his birthday present.
